A Brief Note On The Film "Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives"

On Tuesday, April 6, I attended a candlelight vigil to honor and remember those transgender people who have been victims of violence. In the past two weeks, two trans women  have been found slain.  Violence against transgender and gender nonconforming people is all too pervasive.  So often our lives are treated as if they don't matter.  I feel it's imperative to remember those who we've lost and to speak out against anything that might perpetuate violence against trans people.

Tuesday's event was also a protest of a film that will be premiering soon at the Tribeca Film Festival called "Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives." There have been  many differing opinions and much controversy surrounding this film within the trans community and the LGBT community at large.  Upon initially hearing about this film and the controversy surrounding it, I didn't want to get involved, particularly because I hadn't seen the film.  But since then I have seen the film and feel compelled to speak publicly about it.  My specific analysis of the film is coming soon.

I did want to make a comment now, however, on my attendence at Tuesday's vigil/protest.  Over the years I have attended many political protests around transgender issues and vigils honoring our dead.  Also, as an artist, I have always supported freedom of speech and expression.  I continue to.  I adamantly believe that  the artist's voice is essential in society and culture.  Art and cultural production is often the cite for fresh perspectives and insights  to spark new discourse and dialogue about very important issues.

When asked to lend my voice to the cause of ending violence against trans people by attending Tuesday's vigil, I couldn't say, " no" even at the risk of potentially alienating members of our community.  But  I do hope that we can all agree that violence against trans and gender nonconforming people is all too pervasive and must end now.

More on the film soon.
